Cargo carrier overturns and drowns 2 people including Rameez

In an accident which happened on the night of 20th April 2010 at 10.30 p.m., RKL a cargo carrier Meegon travelling from N. Maafaru to Male overturned outside N. Manadhoo and lost 2 of its passengers.

The Police of N. Atoll, Coastguard and some people from N. Atoll Maafaru along with Police from R. Atoll, B. Atoll and LH. Atoll were searching for these 2 people, when this afternoon at 2.00 p.m., MNDF divers found the bodies 24 metres drowned under the sea. The two bodies were of Mohamed Ali (Blink/Lh. Hinnavaru) and Mohamed Rameez (Kuda Dhaharaage/ L. Dhanbidhoo). At 1.20 p.m. in the afternoon, both bodies were taken to N. Manadhoo.

The carrier was travelling with total 7 passengers and the Police found out about it when one of its passengers swam ashore to Maafaru at 2.00 a.m. and reported of the incident. The N. Atoll Office launch was dispatched along with the Police and they save one passenger. 3 more swam ashore to N. Maafaru. In total, onboard this carrier, there were 6 Maldivians and 1 Bangladeshi national. The carrier was carrying 2 excavators, 1 tractor, steel oil tank, and some other materials.
