A Bangladeshi man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl in Laamu atoll Dhanbidhoo has been arrested.
A Police official said that they had arrested the Bangladeshi man last Sunday for sexual assault, under orders from the Dhanbidhoo Island Office.
Mohamed Arif, the Island Chief of Dhanbidhoo, said that the man who had sexually molested the 13-year-old girl was a Bangladeshi who was hired by a private company to work at a construction site in the island. The man worked at a site near the house where the little girl lived, the Island Chief said. He also said that the man had acted during a time when there were no adults in the house.
“He asked the girl to give him a water bottle and when she went inside the house to get it he followed her and tried to force himself on her,” the Island Chief said. He said that the girl had started screaming and shouting for help and three other kids who were near the house had rushed in to see what was happening. When the man had seen the other kids he had released the little girl and run away.
The Island Chief also said the girl had said that the Bangladeshi man had molested her.
The Gender Ministry recently said that child sexual assault cases involving expatriates working in Maldives had become very high.
